The Complete Maus- Art Spiegelman

maus

This graphic novel is a collection of 2 separate volumes Maus I: A Survivor’s Tale subtitled My Father Bleeds History and Maus II: A Survivor’s Tale subtitled And Here My Troubles Began. Those works were published in 1986 and 1991 respectively.

The author, Art Spiegelman, tells the story of the Holocaust through the experiences of his father. The idea of representing Jews as mice, Germans as cats, Americans as dogs, and Poles as pigs is brilliant. That makes it extremely easy to understand which characters are involved in the novel at every point in time. That’s especially true when characters try to disguise themselves as another nationality.

Until today, Maus is the only graphic novel that has won the Pulitzer Prize making it a must read not only for graphic novels lovers but rather for everyone.
